A Day at Disney World’s Epcot Center in February 2012

Epcot Center at Walt Disney World

Disney World is now having a special rate for Florida residents. They are now offering a three day “Wild Pass” for $99 plus tax. I decided to take advantage of this great rate and went to Epcot on a beautiful February day.

Test Track

As many times as I have been to Epcot, I had never been on the Test Track ride. After a short wait, because we used our speed pass, we got right in to this simulation ride (that shows you how a vehicle handles on a test track). As you wait in line, you get to look around at a simulated vehicle test lab. You then watch a short video, before you get into the car. You can ride up to six people in a car. It takes you through a lot of twists and turns and shows you how a car would slow down with and without ABS brakes. The ride really speeds up as you go outside and around some sharp turns. I was really impressed by this ride and would recommend it.

The Land Pavilion and the Soarin ride

We went on the Land ride which takes you on a relaxing boat ride through a tropical rain forest, an African desert complete with sandstorm, and the windswept plains of a small and turn-of-the-century family farm. You go through a large greenhouse farm of the future that shows futuristic farming techniques such as Hydroponics, Aeroponics and Aquaculture. It’s not just about fruits and vegetables; there are also fish and alligator farms on display. Since The Land is a Disney restaurant supplier, you could very well be seeing your entree.

The Land is also home to one of Epcot’s most popular rides, Soarin. This is one ride that you’ll want to get to as early as possible to avoid the long lines. You definitely will want to take advantage of FastPass for this one, but even these run out quickly. The Soarin ride is a simulated hang gliding ride that is very realistic feeling. You begin to “fly” through stunning scenes filmed over the California landscape. You then fly over snow capped ridges, desert canyons, rocky seashores, and gorgeous beaches. The whole experience culminates with a swooping run up Main Street USA to Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland, ending among the evening fireworks display. This is a fun ride I definitely recommend it as a must see if you are at Epcot!

The Land has a rotating restaurant that spins slowly around a full 360 degrees. The food is good and much of it is grown on site. They have these cute little Mickey Mouse shaped butters. We were told by the waitress that some people have taken the Mickey butters with them, only to find out later that it melted in their pocket book.

World Showcase at the Disney’s Epcot Center

We visited all the countries and enjoyed the outdoor entertainment, which included a British Invasion rock music show at the United Kingdom, a Moroccan band which included a belly dancer and a drumming group from Tokyo Japan.

We went on the rides in both Mexico and Norway.

The Mexico ride is another boat ride that takes you through some nice Mexican scenes. It is especially beautiful in the restaurant area. The twilight scene of restaurant overlooks the plaza and the boat ride is very dark and romantic with lanterns on the tables providing the light. It ends with an “It’s a small world” type exhibit.

The ride in Norway is called Maelstrom. You ride in a Viking-style boat that takes you through a 10th century Viking village and a mythical forest where you’ll encounter trolls who cast a curse on the boats. From here, the boat starts going backwards before it reaches a waterfall and again changes course.

One of my favorite parts of the day was enjoying a pumpkin funnel cake outside of the American Experience and we also enjoyed one of Disney’s famous turkey legs.

All in all, it was a wonderful February day in Disney’s Epcot.
